The 2e Center for Research and Professional Development hosted its second biennial symposium, entitled “Vision and Leadership in 2e Education," on October 13-14, 2017, at the Garland in North Hollywood, CA., and Bridges Academy in Studio City, CA.
 
The symposium featured keynotes, panel discussions by 2e Hall of Fame inductees, "Issues and Answers" breakout discussions on strategic topics, and forums with noted experts on program development, research-based strategies, and related issues in 2e education programs.

Event highlights

•The inaugural class was inducted into the 2e Hall of Fame at a dinner ceremony on Oct. 13. The class is comprised of Lois Baldwin, Linda Brody, Mary Ruth Coleman, L. Dennis Higgins, C. June Maker, M. Elizabeth Nielsen, and Joanne Whitmore Schwartz.

•Leading scholars gave keynotes on talent development and neurodiversity. The featured speakers were Dr. Scott Barry Kaufman, Dr. Sally Reis,  Jonathan Mooney, and Dr. Susan Baum.

2e Hall of Fame inductees

Lois Baldwin
Taught in one of the first public school programs for gifted handicapped students, run by the Board of Cooperative Educational Services of Southern Westchester, White Plains, N.Y.
Linda E. Brody
Co-authored early publications on twice-exceptionality, including Learning Disabled Gifted Students: Identification and Programming.
Mary Ruth Coleman
Has conducted research focused on students with exceptional learning needs, especially those with learning disabilities and those with gifts; served as co-principal investigator for the Early Learning Disabilities Initiave and co-director of North Carolina's Statewide Technical Assistance for Gifted Education Center.
L. Dennis Higgins
Worked directly with students officially identified as twice exceptional by the Albuquerque Public School System from 1988 until retiring in 2010.
C. June Maker
Published Providing Programs for Gifted Handicapped, a seminal work in the field, in 1977.
M. Elizabeth Nielsen
Served as principal investigator for two university and public school district collaborative Javits Grant projects focused on gifted students with disabilities.
Joanne Whitmore Schwartz
Authored Giftedness, Conflict, and Underachievement in 1980 and co-authored Intellectual Giftedness in Disabled Persons in 1985.

2017 2e symposium book now available

This online ISSUU publication includes materials from the "Vision and Leadership in 2e Education" symposium, a presenter/attendee directory, dozens of photos, and information about the participating schools and programs.

Our deepest thanks go out to all who attended and helped stage the symposium! It was wonderful to see so much passion for the work we all are doing in the field of twice-exceptional education.
